Funding Databases for Federal and Private Funding

• COS (Community of Science) Funding Opportunities Database, http://fundingopps.cos.com/

• Grants.gov contains funding opportunities from the 26 federal grant making agencies, http://www.grants.gov
• GrantsNet is especially useful for career development of new invesitgators, http://www.grantsnet.org

National Institutes of Health

• NIH in a Nutshell, http://healthlinks.washington.edu/rfs/NIH.pdf
• Extramural Funding: funding for research that is done outside of an agency or organization. For example, National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural research is done in its own laboratories, but  NIH's extramural funding goes to universities and labs outside of NIH.
• Program Officer: person to contact at an agency or organization to ask questions about the funding opportunity. Often called a Program Director, Branch or Section Chief, Group Leader, Vice President for Research.
• CRISP lists grants already funded by NIH, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), and Office of Assistant Secretary of Health (OASH), http://crisp.cit.nih.gov/
• NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts is the weekly newsletter for all official NIH announcements. This is the best place to keep up with NIH and find program officers. The table of contents is available by email, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html

• Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) does the final processing of grants. OSP requires at least ten working days (two weeks) and sometimes longer for internal processing of your grant application. • COS Funding Opportunities Database is a good place to start searching for Federal funding. It is a good place to find difficult-to-track funding sources like the military, http://fundingopps.cos.com/

 Private Funding

• There is no one "best way" to find nonfederal opportunities. Use many sources--databases, books, acknowledgements in research papers, colleagues, etc.
• Don't worry if a grant source says it doesn't fund individuals. You are part of the University of Washington, so you qualify in those situations
• The Foundation Center's database is available by appointment in RFS or, for a fee, you can access their database online, http://www.foundationcenter.org/
