Pilot proposals: RFA to Integrate Aging and Cancer Research in the FHCRC/UW Cancer Center

Draft proposals due: December 13, 2002
RFA url: http://www3.cancer.gov/cancercenters/announcements/agingRFA.pdf

Dear FHCRC/UW cancer and aging investigators,

We are soliciting your help in assembling an application from our Cancer Center to obtain a NCI/NIA grant to develop a formal program to integrate aging and cancer research. This program will provide up to $500,000 annual direct costs, including funding for pilot projects (up to $100,000 direct per year for two years) in clinical, public health or basic biology research themes in aging and cancer (further details below). The strength of our application depends in large part on the breadth and depth of our pilot applications. We invite you to submit a proposal in one of two formats:

1. A brief example of a potential pilot project in one of the thematic areas. This should be no more than a few paragraphs, but it should provide peer reviewers with enough information to judge the potential of the planning activity to generate state-of-the-art research and a stable research base that will develop into a strong cancer center "Program.

2. If you are ready to submit a full pilot proposal for funding, submit a title, abstract, specific aims and a paragraph description of how the project falls within one of the thematic areas and addresses one or more of the research priorities described at <http://nia.nih.gov/health/nianci> (limit 5 pages).

Each pilot project that is funded must be led by an investigator whose research background clearly bridges aging and cancer research OR by co-investigators, one who has a track record in cancer research and another with a track record in aging research.
Draft versions of these project descriptions are due December 13. Final versions are due January 3, 2003. Please forward your proposal to Heather York, Box 358080, D1-060, Office of the Director, FHCRC.

The full Request for Applications (RFA CA-03-504) is available at http://www3.cancer.gov/cancercenters/announcements/agingRFA.pdf.

For more information, contact Peter Rabinovitch petersr@u.washington.edu, phone: 206-685-3761.

National Science Foundation (NSF)
NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI), FY 2003

School of Medicine Letter of Intent deadline: December 10, 2002
Office of Research deadline: December 13, 2002
NSF 01-171: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2002/nsf01171/nsf01171.html

NSF has announced its 2003 Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program to increase access to scientific and engineering equipment for research and research training in academic institutions. Proposals may be for a single instrument, a large system of instruments, or multiple instruments that share a common or specific research focus. (The program will not support renovation or modernization of research facilities or fixed equipment.) Approximately $75 million has been allocated for awards ranging from $100,000 to $2 million. For FY 2002, the overall proposal funding rate was 40%.

The University can submit two proposals for instrument acquisition, plus a third for instrument development, thus there may be substantial competition for the privilege of preparing an application. The screening and selection of preproposals is being handled through the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, and each submission from Schools and Colleges must be signed off by the Chair and Dean. The requirement for matching is a substantial hurdle. It is recommended that you initiate internal discussions at the Department and School level as soon as possible.

Each potential PI should prepare a letter of intent to include an abstract of the proposal, the type of instrument acquisition or development (identify category) to be requested, the approximate dollar value, and the source of the required cost sharing. This letter (plus 10 copies) should be submitted to the Department Chair (signature required) and forwarded to the Office of Research and Graduate Education (RGE), A-300 HSC, Box 356340, by Tuesday, December 10. Submission will be reviewed, co-signed and delivered to the Vice Provost Craig Hogan for the internal deadline of December 13. The three invited proposals must be submitted electronically via FastLane to GCS (with required GC-1 form) no later than January 16, 2003.

MRI Program
Conversation with RGE: ASAP
Letters of Intent due RGE: December 10
Office of Research deadline: December 13

The NIH announced the NCRR Shared Instrumentation Grant (SIG) in the December 14, 2001 NIH Guide (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-02-036.html). The SIG provides support for expensive state-of-the-art instrumentation utilized in both basic and clinical research. The S10 mechanism is meant to provide commercially available instruments to be shared by researchers and not to support development of experimental equipment. Applications are limited to instruments that cost at least $100,000 per instrument or system. The maximum award is $500,000. It is the responsibility of the individual PIs to complete the application form PHS 398 (rev. 4/98) for the requested instrument and the accompanying GC-1 form. Note that NIH will cover only the direct cost of the piece of equipment. The proposal should indicate the mechanisms available to support associated costs such as maintenance and repair. A major user group of three or more NIH-supported investigators should be identified.

The Office of Research and Graduate Education in the School of Medicine, while not involved in the application process, is gathering information from interested departments to avoid overlap of requests for similar instruments. Please notify them by Thursday, February 28, 2002 with the name of the PI, the names of other faculty who will be involved with the instrument use, indication of whether it is a multi-School request, the instrument requested and the total direct costs.
