Improving public health through access to information

In May 2006, the UW Health Sciences Libraries received major funding from the National Library of Medicine for:
- A renewed contract as the Regional Medical Library for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR), serving Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington
- Two national center contracts serving all eight regions of the
National Network of Libraries of Medicine, including:
- Outreach Evaluation Resource Center (OERC), which provides assistance in developing well-planned evaluation to help target and measure health information outreach success.
- Web Services Technology and Operations Center (Web-STOC), which provides the IT infrastructure to operate the NN/LM website.
Serving the Community
Regional Medical Library staff provide training, technical assistance and funding to enhance health information access for underserved health professionals and communities in the NN/LM PNR. Funding awards support local health information outreach and partnerships, such as:
- African American Reach and Teach Health Ministry (WA)
- The Access to Wellness Project provides AARTH with the tools and resources necessary to access culturally relevant health information.
- Outside In (OR)

- Staff learned how to find and evaluate health information on the Internet and to teach the skills to the population they serve.
- Voices of Hope (MT)

- This planning award considered how health information resources could be part of a comprehensive suicide prevention plan.
