General Description

The Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) are the University of Washington's primary resource for information in the biomedical sciences, including the fields of biomedicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, public health, social work, and allied disciplines. The collections include over 350,000 bound volumes and about 2,400 current journal subscriptions. There are two satellite libraries: The K.K. Sherwood Library at the Harborview Medical Center, and the Social Work Library in the Social Work Building.

Electronic Access to Library Services

Many resources and services are available online. Two different access points are provided: HealthLinks and hsl at u.washington.edu. These electronic gateways permit you to contact the Libraries at your convenience, 24 hours a day.

HealthLinks is the Web Gateway to resources of the UW Health Sciences Libraries and the Health Sciences Center. You can access HealthLinks through a Web browser at http://healthlinks.washington.edu/. For remote access to resources licensed for UW affiliates See Connecting to UW Online Restricted Resources at http://healthlinks.washington.edu/howto/connect/.

hsl at u.washington.edu is the uniform email address for all UW Health Sciences Libraries. Send your request for materials or other library services to hsl at u.washington.edu. Your message will be forwarded to the appropriate individual or department for a response.

Classes and Tours

A wide variety of education services, such as library tours and information retrieval and management classes, are available. Individuals wanting to access bibliographic databases (e.g., MEDLINE) via their personal computers are encouraged to attend regularly scheduled sessions. You can access the current schedule of classes by pointing your Web browser to http://healthlinks.washington.edu/hsl/classes/.

Consultation Services

Information Desk staff help users locate and retrieve information and provide basic help with the library's collections and resources. Users needing extended help are referred to a consulting librarian.

Each Health Sciences department or program has a designated Librarian Liaison who serves as a contact for current information about HSL programs, resources, and services. Faculty are urged to contact their liaison to discuss information needs. For more information visit the HealthLinks Liaison page at http://healthlinks.washington.edu/hsl/liaisons/.

Search Services

Self-service searching is available on a variety of databases. Users may search MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and other resources without charge. Staff mediated searches from more than 500 databases are available. Requests supporting patient care are given priority.

Circulation Policies

HSL's book loan period is four weeks, and journals dated before 1991 circulate for one week. Most other library materials are library use only.

The complete UW Libraries Loan Code is available on the web at http://www.lib.washington.edu/services/borrow/loancode.html.

A valid University of Washington identification card is required to check out library materials. Individuals or groups not affiliated with UW may often qualify for a borrower's card. Details are available at the HSLIC Information Desk or from the Suzzallo Library Cashier at 206-543-1174. Also for more information please see the HSL Circulation Policies page at http://healthlinks.washington.edu/hsl/circulation_policies.html.

Health Sciences Microlab

The Microlab located at HSLIC supports health sciences instruction programs with the most appropriate resources and technology. The facilities include Windows and Macintosh computers for self-service or class instruction, audiovisual viewing areas, and equipment to support items on reserve. For more information see the HSL Microlab page at http://healthlinks.washington.edu/hsl/commons/.

Course Reserves

Course Reserves provide self-service access to reserve materials for UW Health Sciences classes. Reserve materials include books, reprints, software, and other materials necessary for coursework. Electronic reserves are also available. See the HSL Course Reserves page.

Document and Copy/Print Services

Document Services are designed to simplify access to library materials regardless of physical location. You may request that items be pulled and photocopied, with copies either held for pick-up, mailed, faxed, or sent to you electronically. Books and copies of journal articles not owned by the UW Libraries can also be obtained; allow up to two weeks for delivery.

Document Services may be requested in person or by mail, fax, Web form, or electronic mail. User fees apply and may be charged to a UW budget, MasterCard, or Visa.

Self service copiers and printers in the Health Sciences Library accept Husky, Dawg Prints, or departmental cards only. Dawg Prints cards may be purchased in the library for $5 cash. For more information click here.
