Telemakus Project

The Telemakus project is developing data mining, representation and mapping solutions to permit automation of the creation and maintenance of a searchable database that generates knowledge maps via query tools and concept mapping algorithms. We are applying natural language processing models and information analysis methods to speed up the process.

There are varied opportunities for undergraduate capstone projects or graduate student portfolio experiences by participating in any of the following components of the project, including:

  • defining and implementing appropriate standards for system architecture and documentation;
  • designing, coding and/or implementing the resource system;
  • implementing cross database query planning, query execution and query result aggregation and ranking;
  • testing, validation and improvement of the software.

Experience with one or more of the following competencies is preferred:

  • Database design, implementation and maintenance, preferably using relational database management systems
  • Advanced pattern matching and data parsing
  • Software design, implementaton and maintenance with clients running on various platforms
  • World Wide Web programming experience, client/server architecture

Telemakus is a high profile project in the Division of Biomedical and Health Informatics and funded by the Ellison Medical Foundation. The interdisciplinary team includes faculty, staff and students representing computer science, informatics, library and information science, systems and software design and natural language processing.
