Some electronic journals allow direct linking to individual articles
or journal titles for course web sites. This may be as simple as copying
the URL displayed by the browser, or may require constructing a new
URL. Follow the instructions below exactly to create stable
links. Reserves staff at the Health Sciences Libraries use
these same steps to create links for electronic reserves.
Creating a URL that works from Off-Campus
Logging in to a campus web site or portal with a UW NetID does not
automatically mean that any resources a user tries to access will
be available from off-campus. The user will have to log into the proxy
server, use our bookmarklet, or use a link that has been proxied.
The easiest way to make sure that a restricted, UW-licensed resource
is available to all UW students faculty, staff and students from both
on- and off-campus is to proxy the url.
To create a URL that will force the user through the proxy server,
prepend http://offcampus.lib.washington.edu/login?url= to the
actual URL.
For example, if to make the link for ProQuest Databases (http://www.umi.com/pqdauto)
available from off-campus, the URL will look like this: http://offcampus.lib.washington.edu/login?url=http://www.umi.com/pqdauto
More information is available at http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/ezhelp.html.
URLs and access restrictions for electronic resources change frequently.
The instructions below are accurate as of April 10, 2008. Be sure to
check links at least once a quarter to make sure they are still functioning.
If not, or if you have any other questions, email hsl at u.washington.edu or call (206)221-3418.
Linking to Journal Titles
- Find the desired journal in the UW
Libraries Catalog.
- Right click on the direct link to the journal.
- Select "copy shortcut" from the dialog box to copy the
stable url of the journal.
- Paste this url in the desired application.
- Wherever possible, this URL will provide a direct link to the individual
journal. However, in some cases, it will link to a package of journals.
- Note: This URL may look significantly different than the URL displayed
in the browser after connecting to the journal.
Linking to Journal Articles
The method of linking to individual articles depends on which package
a journal belongs to, as outlined below.
JSTOR

desired article.
- Copy the URL displayed by the browser when viewing the article.

It is stable, but can by shortened for clarity and ease of use.
- Delete all of the characters at the end of the URL, starting with
the question mark (?).
