This is a small collection of links to get you started in researching information about the public health issues raised by your problems. Resources are presented in broad categories. You will want to use additional resources (HealthLinks, web, colleagues, fellow students, etc.) to find more information specific to your needs.

Additional information about the medical or clinical aspects of the problems may be located using resources such as MedlinePlus (which is also useful for health issues for specific populations), textbooks (print or online), or PubMed searches.

For information about working with people:

Ethnomed Locally produced resource about cultural beliefs, medical issues and related topics pertaining to the health care of recent immigrants, focusing on those in the Seattle area.

The Provider's Guide to Quality and Culture Web site with information and links to resources for working with multi-cultural populations. Includes information about health disparities.

For data and information on the state of Washington:

Access Washington Your portal to information (laws, departments, etc.) in the state of Washington

Keep in mind that many counties, cities, programs, and organizations have similar web sites (easily located with a Google search) to find information specific to that region or organization. These will provide you with the basic information. You may also wish to talk with someone to see how the program operates in real life..

Washington State Department of Health - Community and Family Health - Oral Health Program Information for public and providers on finding dental health care, statistics and data in Washington.

Washington State Oral Disease Burden Document: the Impact of Oral Disease on the Lives of Washingtonians Contains summarized and detailed statewide data on oral diseases, preventive measures, workforce, and dental services as well as links to more sources of information.

For information about access to and utilization of care:

Administration for Children and Family, US Health & Human Services Information about various social and health programs for children.

Health Professionals' Shortage Areas (HPSA) Information about these areas and programs available to assist

Medicaid state reports State-specific data on Medicaid recipients, expenditures, and program characteristics, along with regional and national comparisons.

Medicare and Medicaid information Detailed information about these programs, including information for working with special populations.

Statehealthfacts.org Use this site to get data on such topics as health status, health coverage and uninsured. You can look at the Washington state profile or do comparisons with the other 49 states.
