Cellular and Molecular Biology

by Lorraine Raymond, Collection Development & Catalog Librarian

A furor has recently erupted in the publishing world with respect to one of our journals, Cellular and Molecular Biology. The editor, Professor Raymond Wegmann, Institut d'Histochimie Medicale, Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, has broken with the former publisher, Pergamon Press and is now producing the journal himself. Meanwhile, Pergamon Press continues to publish its own version of the journal.

The two versions look very much alike on the outside but are in reality quite different. Prof. Wegmann has published two issues since the break with Pergamon: a double issue (v.38, nos.5/6, August 1992) and a normal single issue (v.38, no.7, November 1992.) There are a combined total of 331 pages in these two issues, single-spaced and well illustrated. Pergamon has published one issue since the break (v.38, no.5, August 1992), with 5 articles covering 65 pages, most of which are double-spaced and printed in a variety of type fonts. The 1993 price for Prof. Wegmann's publication is approximately US $488, while the Pergamon publication will cost approximately US $656 in 1993. It is unlikely, therefore, that many libraries can afford to subscribe to both.

We have heard that at least one medical library has decided to subscribe to the editor's version on the assumption that the "intellectual legitimacy lies with the editor rather than the publisher." We welcome your comments as to the value of this journal in general and to the respective merits of the two versions. Please call 543-3438 or reply by email to lraym@u.washington.edu, since we must make an acquisitions decision on this title in January.

Serials Order Deadline

Every two years, the Libraries encounters a deadline for placing new serial orders in order to permit the payment for all subscriptions by the end of the biennium. This year's deadline is January 31, a month earlier than usual, since the Libraries is also implementing a new library system replacing Geac in 1993. Requests for new serial titles submitted after the deadline will be held for consideration in the next biennium.

We will continue to purchase books received on our approval plan through the end of June, and will place orders for rush Reserve or Reference materials during this period. Lower-priority book requests will be held for order in the new biennium.

Table of Contents Service

by Lou Pray, Information Services Librarian

MEDLINE is only one of the many databases accessible to UW faculty, staff and students via UWIN and the Internet. One of the more interesting files is UNCOVER (UNCO), a table of contents service which describes journals and their contents. It includes more than 12,000 journal titles and more than three million articles. Over 750,000 articles are added annually.

In UNCOVER you can browse the table of contents of the most current issue of a particular journal or search for articles by or about a certain person or topic. To access this service, go to the main menu of UWIN. Type S to start the service and then unco to access UNCOVER. From the index, go to Libraries and select Libraries on the Internet and then Uncover.

Once connected to the service, select how you want to search (by journal name, author, or word.) Searching by title of journal requires no special knowledge; just enter the name as you know it and you will get the closest matches. Then type the line number of the desired title and e to examine the issue (scan the table of contents). Author searching, or 'Names' as it is called in UNCOVER, may be typed in any order. Multiple authors as listed on the Table of Contents page are all searchable in the 'Names' mode. Try this service and see how easy it is to browse electronically through your most relevant scholarly journals.

Dartmouth Databases

Using the Internet to gain access to the Dartmouth Online Catalog, you will find more than just the library's holdings. Dartmouth offers access to two medically oriented databases, PILOTS and CORK, through its online catalog.

PILOTS (Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome Database) is a project of the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, providing access to international, interdisciplinary literature on various forms of traumatic stress. The database, which contains over 3,400 records, is updated quarterly and contains citations to journal articles, book chapters, technical reports, and other documents.

CORK is an index to materials about alcoholism and substance abuse which are owned by the Project CORK Resource Center, Hanover, New Hampshire. The database also indexes books, book chapters, and journal articles.

To get to these two databases, telnet directly to the online catalog of Dartmouth University, lib.dartmouth.edu. When connected, type select file CORK or select file PILOTS and press "enter." On this menu-driven system, you will see a list of commands at the bottom of the screen. Printing or downloading can be done as the citations scroll past on the the screen. Turn printer capture, type display (record no) long and press "enter." Caution: Do not choose "print" from the the CORK menu, since this option prints your citations on the local printers at Dartmouth. For further information, call Lou Pray at 543-7497 or lpray@u.washington.edu, or talk to any reference librarian.

PsycINFO Database

by Terry Ann Jankowski, Information Services Librarian

PsycINFO is the most recent addition to the collection of databases available on the UW campus network (UWLIB). PsycINFO (or PSYC) indexes and abstracts articles from over 1,300 journals. In addition, it includes citations to some technical reports and dissertations in the field of psychology. Selected coverage of books and book chapters prior to 1981 is also provided. PsycINFO on UWLIB covers 1967 to the present and is updated monthly.

PsycINFO can be searched either through UWIN or WILLOW using the same searching and printing commands as the other UWLIB databases. Some features of PSYC include limiting citations to age groups; using both full names and initials for author searching; substituting ampersands (&'s) for the word "and" in journal titles, e.g. search for Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology as journal-of-consulting-&-clinical-psychology; and limiting to specific language by use of a three letter abbreviation. A new qualifier SW has been added for use in retrieving single word descriptors. For instance, stress.sw. would retrieve only materials indexed with the subject descriptor "stress" and not the more specific "physiologic stress" or "posttraumatic stress disorder."

With the arrival of PSYC on UWLIB, the CD-ROM PSYCLIT will no longer be available for use at the Social Work Library or HSLIC.

Demonstrations on searching PSYC will be offered at HSLIC each Wednesday at 9:30 am, and in the Social Work computer lab each Tuesday at 11 am. See the Information Management Education schedule for details. For more information or to receive a copy of the printed documentation describing PsycINFO, come to the HSLIC Reference Desk or call 543-3394.

Remodel Update

by Carolyn Weaver, Associate Director for Administration

Last summer the reference collection was weeded and stacks and study carrels relocated in anticipation of an electrical and communications upgrade which would permit the relocation of the reference desk and self-service computers from the lobby area. Physical Plant work is now tentatively scheduled for the end of January and is expected to be completed by mid-March. Watch for signs with the exact schedule.

When the Health Sciences Library was constructed in 1973, adequate electricity and communications access was largely confined to the west side of the facility, and the presence of asbestos in ceiling and walls restricted the location of power-hungry electronic services. The current upgrade will provide electrical and communications connections in previously inaccessible areas on the east side of the building.

When the upgrade is completed, the Reference Desk will be relocated to the blue counter which was constructed last summer, and most U-Search Area self-service workstations will be moved to the area adjacent to the Reference Desk to improve user support for the systems. The Ready Reference Collection will be integrated into the Reference Stacks, providing a single reference collection and improved ease of use.

The upgrade will provide X-terminals in A-Wing and near the serials sorting area for access to the Online Catalog, and will also permit the installation of a phone near the self-service copiers to request service for the copiers. It also allows for future expansion of services into areas where communications are not needed at the present time.

What's Next?

Following the Reference area upgrade, the Circulation Desk and Technical Services work areas will also be remodeled, requiring the temporary relocation of services and staff to other areas. This work is expected to take place during Spring quarter.

Circulation services will probably be relocated temporarily to the current U-Search Area. Various public areas will be screened off to provide temporary staff work areas, and some staff will try telecommuting to ease the relocation space crunch. As with previous HSLIC remodels, no restriction of user services is anticipated while work is in progress.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience users may encounter during remodeling. Watch future issues of Books & Bytes for details.
