UW REFERENCE LIBRARY on the Move!

by Terry Ann Jankowski, Information Retrieval and Management Librarian

Over the summer, the UW Reference Library (UWREFLIB) moved to Byron, the IBM UNIX (AIX) operating system on the IBM 3090. This changeover makes access and use much easier by conforming to the UNIX campus computing standard.

Searching techniques remain the same with the following enhancements:

To use UWREFLIB, you must first establish an account on Byron by accessing Byron through the campus network. At the "byron%" login prompt, enter new and provide the information The UWREFLIB is an evolving system. Future developments include adding the online catalog records and the ERIC database.

Questions and comments about UWREFLIB are welcome. You may send them via email to uwreflib@u or call 543-3397 and speak with Terry Ann Jankowski, Information Retrieval and Management Librarian.

Teaching Learning Center Supports Curriculum

by Leilani St. Anna, TLC Librarian

The Teaching Learning Center (TLC) supports the health sciences curriculum with the latest and most appropriate resources and technology. Services include course reserves, audiovisual software and viewing facilities, microcomputer software and hardware, and purchase or preview of course-related media. The TLC collection also includes a selection of core textbooks. Records of TLC textbook and video holdings are accessible through the Online Catalog, but software holdings are often not available online. Stop by the TLC Desk to see a complete listing of the TLC Collection. Faculty or staff may request individual copies of the list. The Course Reserve service is a major TLC function. To place materials on reserve, complete a reserve list form, available at the TLC Desk, for each course. Lists are processed on a "first come, first served" basis. Titles not owned by the UW Libraries will be ordered if still in print, but may take as long as ten weeks to obtain for some foreign titles. Submit lists as early as possible to insure that reserve materials will be available at the beginning of the quarter. Contact Margaret Sandelin at 543-3435 for further information. To preview audiovisuals or make suggestions for purchase, contact Leilani St. Anna at 685-3125. All questions concerning the TLC can be sent by email to hsltlc@max.u.washington.edu.

New Standard ILL Fee Supports Access to Information

by Elaine Martin, Associate Director for Education, Clinical and Research and Services

Effective September 1, a flat fee of $4 per item (plus a surcharge of $3 per item for telefax transactions) will be charged for all materials obtained for UW faculty, staff, and students from other institutions via interlibrary loan (ILL). We expect that most users will see a reduction in ILL charges, since all lending library charges to HSLIC, averaging $6-8 per item, were previously passed on to the requester. The new ILL fee, which is comparable to HSLIC's charges to UW affiliates for Document Delivery and Loansome Doc services, represents a major change in service philosophy, since we will now help subsidize the cost of obtaining copies of items not in the collection.

While HSLIC's collection budget has not declined in actual dollars in recent years, purchasing power has been seriously eroded by inflation and serials price increases. Although we make every effort to acquire books and journals needed by users, funding is insufficient to purchase every title requested. Since the library should be able to provide Health Sciences faculty, staff and students with all information needed for research, patient care, or teaching, our service role may require obtaining the information from another location for the client rather than purchasing the item outright.

Under this philosophy, HSLIC will be spending some of its acquisitions funds for access to information rather than for ownership of the information. A major service priority in the next biennium will be not only to maintain and build the physical collection but also to use our resources to identify where information is located and to provide access to that information in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Research Funding Service Supports Health Sciences Grantseekers

by Diana Hall, Research Funding Service Librarian

Grantseekers in the Health Sciences are invited to take advantage of the specialized information resources of the Research Funding Service (RFS). Established in 1989 as a partnership of the Health Sciences Library and the School of Medicine, RFS can help Health Sciences faculty, staff, and graduate students locate funding sources, write better proposals, and understand funding processes. The program is directed by Dr. Janet Rasey and staffed by Keith Gormezano, Program Assistant, and Diana Hall, Librarian.

RFS services include individual consultations; provision of information about National Institutes of Health (NIH) opportunities, funding process, and study sections; computerized database searches; and sponsorship of special events such as seminars and workshops. Available information resources include locally created files and databases, HSLIC's Reference collection, and computerized databases such as Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN) and Federal Research in Progress. Referrals are made to other campus offices and off-campus organizations when appropriate.

RFS publishes a monthly "Funding Bulletin" announcing selected funding opportunities, as well as a reference handbook, Getting to the Bottom Line: A Guide for Grantseekers in the Health Sciences.

During the Autumn Quarter , RFS is offering "Grants for Lunch", a series of informal discussions on grantsmanship topics led by UW experts. Meet from noon to 1:00 p.m. on Mondays, September 23, October 28, and November 25 in Room C of the Plaza Cafe. No registration is required.

For more information about RFS services or to make an appointment for an individual or group consultation, call 685-8036, send electronic mail to rfs@locke.hs, or write to RFS at mailstop SC-64. The RFS office is located in HSLIC room T-311 and is open 1-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Name Change for Regional Medical Library

by Neil Rambo, Associate Director, NN/LM, PNR

The Regional Medical Library contract renewal for 1991-1996, which began May 1, brought with it a new name for the program. The national program is now called the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM), and the office and staff of the former Pacific Northwest Regional Health Sciences Library Service (PNRHSLS) are responsible for administering the NN/LM, Pacific Northwest Region. Program services and staff responsibilities as described in the May/June issue of Books & Bytes remain unchanged. If you have questions about the new name, please call 543-8262.

Changes in Document Delivery/Photocopy Services and Rates

by Elaine Martin, Associate Director for Education, Clinical and Research Services

You just heard about a recent article on the effect of passive smoking but don't have time to come to the Health Sciences Library to find and photocopy it. Don't despair. Just call Document Delivery at 543-3436 with the complete citation and let HSLIC staff pull and copy the article for you.

Document Delivery Services are designed to save you time and money. Turnaround time is 24 hours, and patient care requests are given priority. Document Delivery rates include up to 50 pages of photocopying per item. An article of up to 10 pages can be photocopied while you wait. Other services include pulling of lists of references, transmission of telefax messages for library users, and sale of pre-formatted microcomputer disks.

Rate Changes

Document delivery and photocopy rates are expected to change approximately November 1. The new rates (subject to UW Budget Office approval):

Charged to UW Budget $4.00/item
Cash -- UW Faculty, Staff, and Students $4.90/item
All Others $8.00/item

HSLIC Copicard rates are expected to increase to 6.5 per page for UW affiliates, while You Pull/We Copy rates will increase to 11.5 for UW affiliates. The coin or currency charge for all self-service machines will remain at 10 per exposure. Document delivery rates include the state required 13% cash surcharge and 8.2% sales tax for transactions not charged to a UW budget number.
